Description: The annual My LA2050 Grants Challenge calls for ideas that will make LA the best place to play, create, connect, learn and live. Applications for projects and programs are submitted online and the public and a jury select the winning ten $100,000 grant winners. The 2014 My LA2050 Grants Challenge garnered 268 submissions and over 80,000 votes.
Strategy: The LA2050 Goals (play, create, connect, learn, live) determine the categories in which applications are submitted. LA2050 describes the metrics within these goals on their website, though it is not immediately clear the nuances of each goal (and ultimately each category). Do “rates of volunteerism in LA” fall underneath Connect or Live? How can we utilize our existing graphics and assets to help make our goals’ descriptions more accessible?
Given the opportunity to refresh the brand for this year’s upcoming grants challenge, I illustrated the five LA2050 Goals, and how they would exist online, with icons that represent the many metrics of each. LA2050 heavily communicates and relies on their social media channels, weekly newsletter, and submissions portal, so the brand of this year’s challenge is wholly digital.
